Video Purportedly Shows INEC Officials in Akwa Ibom Engaging in Election Malpractice – WATCH

A report by Premium Times alleging election malpractice by INEC officials in Akwa Ibom, has got people talking.

According to the report, officials in Polling Units 009, 010 and 011 at Oniong West Ward 1, Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State colluded with PDP supporters in the area to rig the presidential and national assembly elections in favour of the party.

Here are excerpts from the Premium Times report:

The ugly incident happened in the village square – Ikot Eko Ibon village – within the full glare of villagers.

INEC officials were done with voters’ accreditation as early as 1:30PM in the three units, but refused to commence voting until some PDP chieftains arrived around 4pm.

The PDP chieftains, who apparently were working in agreement with the INEC officials in the units, immediately ordered all the voters to move away from the polling centre.

In the midst of the confusion that ensued, gunshot was fired within the polling centre, prompting the voters who were mostly old men and women from the village to run away to safety.

The PDP supporters then had a field day thumb-printing ballot papers, under the supervision of INEC officials.

Security officials were not deployed in the three units. It is unclear if it is deliberate to allow the PDP supporters execute their plans without molestation.

One of the INEC officials in the units told PREMIUM TIMES he and his colleagues were under pressure from their ‘boss’ to assist the PDP win the elections, but didn’t however explain who the boss was.

Here is the video that was published along with the report:

Power grabbers want to truncate Nigeria’s democracy - Soyinka

In an interview with Sahara TV, Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, said 'illegal, sinister and power-grabbers' are bent on scuttling the country’s current democratic process, are agitating for an interim government and that president Jonathan knows these people.
“This is what bothers me deeply: There are people who see this as an opportunity for their own political and sinister activities in the country. Therefore, we are not even united against the dangerous enemy of the country. The elections themselves are being used as an opportunity of sowing bitter seed of discord and for power-grabbing.
“It is now an established fact that there had been moves towards scuttling the democratic process by instituting a so-called interim government. But the proof is there of some participants in meetings for the formation of an interim government. Why form an interim government when there is an electoral process?
"I went to President Jonathan and I asked him, and he was to all appearances outraged by the very suggestion. I remember he used an expression, ‘If such a thing is going on it is outside my wish or my will. After I have been elected by the entire nation, isn’t being the head of an interim government a demotion and an undignifying position?’
“Maybe there are forces in operation in this nation during this very critical period about which he knows of that is the answer which I could make and it is up to him to sort himself out in contending with these illegal forces,”
“I believe that these elections, going by his (Jonathan) body language… it is very difficult to penetrate truthfully and deeply into the minds of politicians… going by his body language, I think Jonathan has no intention of scuttling the elections.
“In other words, the elections would take place but what kind of elections would we have? And what might be the aftermath of the elections? He has repeatedly said, ‘I’m going back to Otuoke if I lose the election.’ I just hope we don’t wake up one day with our complacent attitude and find out that we, as a people, have been overthrown by very sinister, illegal and useless forces.” Soyinka said

Obama congratulates Netanyahu on election win

US President Barack Obama on Thursday called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to congratulate him on his recent election win, after a campaign that soured relations between the two allies.
Obama spoke to the Israeli leader “to congratulate him on his party’s success in winning a plurality of Knesset seats,” the White House said.
“The president emphasized the importance the United States places on our close military, intelligence, and security cooperation with Israel, which reflects the deep and abiding partnership between both countries.”
Ties have been tested by Netanyahu’s pledge on the campaign trail to oppose the creation of a Palestinian state, which had been the starting point of countless rounds of Middle East peace negotiations.
Obama waited two days before making the normally routine congratulatory call.
The White House said that during the conversation, Obama “reaffirmed the United States’ long-standing commitment to a two-state solution that results in a secure Israel alongside a sovereign and viable Palestine.”
Since the election, Netanyahu has sought to row back on his campaign rhetoric, but the White House has pointedly stated it will review policies that provided diplomatic cover for Israel at the United Nations.

APC warns PDP: Don't attempt to kill Buhari

The National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr Lai Mohammed has sounded a warning to the PDP not to attempt to assasinate Gen Buhari or one of its Chieftains, Chief Bola Tinubu as it had allegedly done in the past. Lai Mohammed, who made the allegation in an interview with Punch yesterday, said any attempt on their lives would lead to consequences that will be very dear for this country.
"I have never seen a government so terrified of elections as this present administration. And I have never seen a candidate so terrified of the opposition as Jonathan.
Even as recent as last week, (Ekiti State Governor Ayodele) Fayose was asking for the withdrawal of Buhari from the Presidential election; and it is just bizarre -but that coming from Fayose, one should not be surprising. Coming to issue of security, they have made an attempt on his (Buhari) life once before; it can be done again. But, let us warn them that any attempt on the life of Buhari or Bola Tinubu will lead to a consequence that will be very dear for this country. They should not even contemplate it.”he said
In the interview, the APC chairman said the allegation leveled against President Jonathan's administration by Former President OLusegun Obasanjo in December 2013 that they were training sniper men to assassinate opposition politicians was true

"It is true. They were trained in Belarus. They are security agents drawn from the NIA, the DSS, the Police, the Air Force and the Navy. They were trained on how to take out targets without any trace or without being discovered and they will leave the scene quietly.”he said
In a swift reaction, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Abdullahi Jalo dismissed Mr Lai Mohammed's allegations, calling on him to provide evidence to prove that the PDP had intentions of assassinating Gen Buhari

"The PDP is committed to the election peace pact signed in Abuja. We will abide by it. It is a covenant we are determined to keep. Having said that, the burden of proof concerning Lai’s allegation rests on him and the party. In the usual manner of whipping up sentiments to deceive Nigerians, they have come up with this propaganda. Let him and his party provide photo, video, audio or meeting place where a plot to assassinate their presidential candidate was hatched. Nigerians have become wiser today. They cannot be swayed by the APC propaganda machine,” he said
